When a concrete job goes wrong — scaling patches, an unexpected crack, or a color that doesn't match what the customer approved — the fix starts with correctly diagnosing the cause, documenting the slab with photos, and calling the customer before they call you. Most failures fall into three categories (scaling, cracking, color/finish issues), each with a different repair path and a different answer to "is this on me or on the concrete."

Every operator who's poured enough slabs has had one go sideways. What separates a contractor who keeps the customer and the referral from one who loses both isn't whether it happened — it's what they do in the first 48 hours after they see it.

Why do concrete jobs go wrong in the first place?

Concrete failures almost always trace back to one of four things: water (too much in the mix, or bleed water finished into the surface), weather (finishing too early, or a hard freeze before cure), curing (no protection, driven on too soon), or the mix itself (wrong slump, bad batch, wrong cement content for the application).

Knowing which bucket a failure falls into matters because it determines who's responsible:

  • Workmanship. You finished the slab while bleed water was still on top, or you skipped the subgrade compaction. That's yours to own.
  • Material. The ready-mix plant sent a hot load, the wrong mix design, or a batch without the air entrainment you specified. That's a conversation with your supplier, and your delivery ticket is the evidence.
  • Customer-caused. They drove a car on the driveway at day two, or salted it the first winter despite being told not to. That's why explaining curing time clearly up front protects you — the conversation you documented is the conversation that saves the repair bill.

How do you fix surface scaling on a concrete slab?

Surface scaling — flaking, peeling, or pitting of the top ¼ inch of the slab — is almost always caused by finishing while bleed water was still present, or by deicing salts and freeze-thaw cycles hitting concrete that wasn't properly air-entrained. It shows up days to weeks after the pour, often right after the first freeze or the first salt application.

The fix depends on severity:

  • Light scaling (cosmetic, surface only): Grind lightly, then apply a penetrating sealer or a thin resurfacer. Treat those numbers as typical ranges, not quotes. Concrete pricing swings hard between the rural Midwest and coastal metros, and cement, fuel, and aggregate costs all move with the market — price the repair off your own current per-yard and labor numbers, and if you're subbing any part of it out, get a fresh local quote before you commit.

How do you fix cracking in a concrete slab?

A crack that's visibly higher on one side than the other, or that keeps widening, usually means the section needs to be cut out and repoured with better base prep and correctly spaced joints. What should you say to the customer when a concrete job goes wrong?

Call the customer yourself, before they have to call you, describe what you found in plain language, and give them a specific next step with a timeframe.

A workable script: "I was back out checking the driveway and noticed some scaling near the garage door. That's from finishing it a little early on a day the bleed water didn't come off fast enough. Here's what I want to do to fix it: grind that section and put a resurfacer down, and I can be out there Thursday. This one's on me, no charge."

Owning it plainly — even when you're not 100% sure it's your fault — buys enormous goodwill. If it later turns out to be a material or customer-caused issue, you can still explain that without looking like you were dodging blame first.
